Academic Support

In addition to the intensive musical training, all Concert Choir students participate in an equally rigorous academic program.  Students attend four hours of tutoring/homework sessions and two and a half hours of skill-building academic classes each week; all under the supervision of a New York State certified teacher. Fourth and fifth grade students attend mathematics classes with a curriculum that parallels the content taught in their schools.  The math curriculum is revised annually based on input from teachers at partnering schools. All students also take music history classes designed to teach core competencies as defined by the New York State curriculum for English language arts, such as understanding sequential information, using literary devices, and comparing and contrasting ideas.

High school students receive critical academic and developmental support with the goal of college enrollment.   Tutoring in algebra, geometry, chemistry, and biology is provided by volunteers with advanced degrees in related fields. Beginning in the summer before their sophomore year, high school students attend Geometry and Algebra Regents Exam prep classes.  The summer before their junior year, high school students attend Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) prep sessions and subsequently take the test in the fall.  All high school juniors and seniors are guaranteed a paid internship at Highbridge Voices, provided that they maintain a B average or better.  In addition, students receive counseling in the college process, including researching, identifying, and selecting appropriate schools, managing the application process, and obtaining scholarships and financial aid.
